are so intense that they take a physical toll: he begins to stutter and develops gastritis. As the pain intensifies, Kir’s mother, Olha, takes him to a sanatorium in the Carpathian Mountains for treatment, but shields him from
a difficult truth: his father has gone missing in action.
The old-fashioned health resort becomes a temporary refuge from reality, and its residents turn out to offer a better cure than its unconventional treatments. While Olha tries to cope with the uncertainty of her husband’s fate by joining a support group for soldiers’ wives, Kir falls in love for the first time, with fourteen-year-old cellist Eva, and befriends Mark, a charismatic masseur who becomes a father figure to him. At night, when the screams of war veteran Valery echo through the hallways, Kir begins to wonder whether his father will ever come back.
